Calling all Volunteers!
Ever wanted to participate in a marathon....without actually having to run 26.2 miles? If so, come on out and join the CVC Green Team as we help the Blue Ridge Marathon go green. We need 24 recycling superhero volunteers ready to help out with recycling, composting and keeping the race course clean. You can enjoy the excitement of the race while doing something good for the environment.
The Blue Ridge Marathon just got certified as a Virginia DEQ Green Event! Here are some of the ways this race is going green : race registration was online and handouts are being kept to a minimum; everything that can be recycled will be recycled; all the food waste from the aid stations will be composted - good fruit will go to Mill Mt. Zoo and the remaining peels and cores will be taken by Roanoke Community Garden Association for composting -a win-win for several local non-profits; and Biodegradable and compostable cups will be used and collected at all the aid stations along the course.
When:
April 21st, 2012
Race starts: 7:30 am
Approximate finish time: 4:30 is race cut off time
For course details see www. blueridgemarathon.com
Volunteer Needs and Duties:
Start and Finish Line:
The race starts and finishes at the Taubman museum. We need a crew of 3-5 volunteers at the start of the race, and 4-6 volunteers for finish line duty. Duties include manning the recycling stations, making sure they are being used properly and encouraging folks to recycle and compost.
Time needed: 2 shifts - race start (7:00am to 12:00am) and race finish (12:00pm to 5:00pm)
Aid Stations along course:
There are 17 aid stations along the course. We need one volunteer per aid station. Duties are to make sure the compostable food and any recyling (cups, energy bar wrappers, etc) are collected properly and assist with the other race volunteers as needed
Time needed: 7:00am until sometime between 2:30 and 4:30. The time varies by aid station location and racers on the course. Volunteers will be notified when the last racer has come through.
