President -
James G. Breakell, Director of Sales, Breakell Inc. - As president of Breakell Inc., James is instrumental in business development and as a liaison to business leaders in the region.  James has served on the board of Clean Valley Council for six years and as chairman of the highly successful Clean Valley Day for four years.  A native of Roanoke, a graduate of the University of Georgia and an active member of many local charities, environmental coalitions and civic clubs, James sets an example of environmental and community leadership in the Roanoke Valley.  
 

Vice President - James Cary Lester, Jr., Environmental Affairs, Roanoke Bar Division/Steel Dynamics - Mr. Lester has over thirty years of experience in the chemical, construction, and environmental services industry.  The majority of his career has been spent in the rapidly changing field of environmental management and worker protection in chemically hazardous conditions.  He has wide ranging experience working with various Federal, State and local regulatory agencies and is Master level certified by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.  Cary has been a board member of Clean Valley Council since 2001.  He and his wife have two daughters

 

Secretary/Treasurer - Cynthia Simonds - Cindy graduated from Quinnipiac College with a B.S. in Occupational Therapy.  She currently volunteers for the Roanoke Academy of Medicine Alliance Foundation.  Cindy and her husband have three children and enjoy spending as much time as possible at Smith Mountain Lake.

Board Members

  • Robert K. Bengston - Bob has been employed by the City of Roanoke since 1980 where he presently serves as the Director of Public Works.  He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and earned his Professional Engineer's License in 1989.  Bob has served on the Board of the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority since 2000 and on the Board of the Clean Valley Council since 2002.  Bob and his wife have four children who provide community service through the City's Adopt-a-park program.

  • Paul N. Bridge - Paul served as the former Executive Director of Carilion Hospital for thirty years,   He enjoys international travel and has visited the continents of North America, South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa with his wife.  Mr. Bridge has a Bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s College in Ammitburg, Maryland, and a Master’s in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

  • Adam Cohen - Adam is a principal partner in Structures Design/Build, LLC. He holds a degree in architecture from the University of Maryland and holds designation as LEED AP, Certified Green Professional and Certified Passive House Consultant. In his 25 year design and build career he has created buildings using alternative technologies such as passive and active solar, earth sheltering, timber frame, other items and 100% recycled content construction. Mr. Cohen is a current board member of the Roanoke City Clean and Green Committee and Vice Chairman of the Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicle Association.

  • Chester G. "Pat" Counts, Fire Chief/Emergency Coordinator, City of Salem

  • Carol L Craft - Carol works for Botetourt County where she manages the municipal storm water permit, promotes recycling and environmental initiatives and builds GIS maps.  She graduated from Roanoke College with a B.A. in Environmental Policy and Biology.  Currently, she is working toward a Master of Public Administration at James Madison University.  Carol and her husband enjoy spending time outdoors with their extended family and three adorable dogs.

  • David Danzler - Dan is the Manager of Retail Operations for Kroger. He has a degree in Business Administration and Finance from Roanoke College.  Mr. Danzler serves on the Virginia Retail Merchants Association Board.

  • Nancy Bailey Duval - Nancy is the Solid Waste Manager for Roanoke County.  She has worked in local government for 22 years.  Nancy was instrumental in implementing the automated garbage collection system for both Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke.  Ms. Duval and her husband spend their time chauffeuring their two daughters around and playing golf.

  • Owen M. Grogan, Jr. - Owen is the Games Director at Virginia Amateur Sports and is responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers of the local organizing committee, sports coordinators, and special events.  He also serves as the liaison with the municipal agencies in securing the sports facilities, officials, and awards for the games and special events.  He is from Roanoke and he earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Wheaton College.  He serves as the Chairperson for Area 8 Special Olympics along with volunteering for the SHARE program for Jerusalem Baptist Church. 

  • Edward Hacker - began working for the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority as its Environmental and Safety Manager in 2008. His responsibilities include environmental initiatives of the Authority, as well as its safety program. Prior to employment at the Authority, Edward worked for the Southeastern Public Service Authority beginning in 1988. He held numerous waste management and recycling positions; the last being manager of the Recycling Department. Mr. Hacker attended Baker College of Michigan for Business Administration, and is currently finishing his BS in Environmental Management with Columbia Southern.

  • Danny W. Hall - Danny Hall  is retired after 31 years with the City of Salem Fire Department and 13 with the Fire Department of Elliston.  Active in the Rotary Club of Salem, Danny has had perfect attendance for over 10 years, and coordinates the potable water disaster response plan, the annual food drive for the local pantry and the winter coat drive for the local clothes closet.  In addition to volunteering with Eastern Montgomery High School Educational Foundation and Alumni Association, Salem Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce, East Hill Neighborhood Watch, and the Virginia Fire Service Council,  Danny and his wife have a son and a daughter, and have been married over 50 years.

  • Eddie Hunter -  Eddie is the Area Vice President /Area Executive  for the Roanoke Area of First Citizens Bank. A Roanoke native he graduated from Roanoke College with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.  Mr. Hunter and wife have two teenage sons and enjoy the outdoors, especially Smith Mountain Lake.

  • Richard C. Maxwell - Richard is a partner in the law firm of Woods Rogers PLC. He received a BA from Lafayette College, a MBA from Eastern Michigan University, and a JD from the University of Richmond. Mr. Maxwell enjoys hiking and riding horses.

  • Anita McMillan - Anita is the Planning and Zoning Director for the Town of Vinton.  Ms. McMillan has held this position for the last 15 years.  She is responsible for the administration and direction of the Town Planning and Zoning Department.  Ms. McMillan represents the Town on the Roanoke Valley Greenway Commission, Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission Pre-Disaster Mitigation Committee, Roanoke Valley Urban Forestry Council and Stormwater Advisory Committee.  Ms. McMillan and her husband have two children.

  • Steven J. McTigue - Stephen has been employed at Roanoke College since 2002 and is currently the Systems Administrator. He is an active member of the Roanoke College sustainability task force which is responsible for implementing ways to make Roanoke College an “eco-friendly” school by reducing energy consumption and waste on campus. Growing up in the desert southwest, Stephen has always appreciated the need to conserve resources and to live within one’s own means. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.A. in sociology.   Mr. McTigue and his wife have two teenage children and spend much of their free time at their children’s sporting events and other school activities.

  • Sandy Murray - Sandy has worked for over 25 years in the advertising industry. She spent many years with Neathawk, Dubuque, & Packett, the largest advertising agency in Western Virginia, formerly The Packett Group, where in 1999 she became President, a title she held for three years.  An active member of the community,  she has served on many boards of directors and has enjoyed making regular appearances as a guest speaker for many Virginia Tech marketing classes.  Mrs. Murray is using her expertise to develop marketing initiatives that will expand Building Specialists Inc. general contractors’ client base and position the company in new markets throughout Western and Central Virginia.  

  • Bittle W. Porterfield, III - Bittle has a BA. from Roanoke College an M.B.A. from Virginia Tech.  He is President, Rice Management Company in Roanoke, and has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.  He has chaired  the Board of Trustees, North Cross School; Roanoke Valley Business Council;  Roanoke Valley Resource Authority and The Foundation for Roanoke Valley.  Mr. Porterfield has served many other institutions of education and culture.  He and his wife have two sons.

  • Allan C. "Cap" Robinson, Jr. Cap is a retired engineer with an MBA.  Cap served in the US Marine Corps in Korea as a pilot.  He and his wife have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.  Mr. Robinson has served other organizations, such as Valley Beautiful, Roanoke Valley Resource Authority , where he serves as Chairman for 7 years, and the Roanoke County Economic Development Authority.

  • Cindy Shelor - Cindy has been employed John T. Morgan Roofing and Sheet Metal Co.,Inc since 1984.  She became Company President in 1994. Ms. Shelor attended James Madison University and Virginia Western Community College. In her leisure time, she enjoys her family, travel, walking and reading. Ms. Shelor currently serves on the Business Leadership Fund, Military Family Support Center, Roanoke Regional Partnership and Suntrust Advisory Board.

  • Laura K. Wasko - Laura  is the small business owner of Retellus, LLC, which provides green building products to architects, interior designers, contractors and end users. Laura moved to Roanoke from South Carolina to launch the Roanoke City Recycling Program in the early 90's. She holds an M.S. in Geography from the University of South Carolina. Ms. Wasko is a member of the City of Roanoke's Clean and Green Citizens Committee and the SW Virginia chapter of the US Green Building Council.  Laura enjoys bicycling, hiking and other outdoor activities.
