Household Hazardous Waste

The average American household produces 100 pounds of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) annually. HHW is any unwanted household product labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, or reactive. The most common products include aerosols, anti-freeze, fertilizers, motor oil, paint supplies, compact fluorescent lights, cleaning products, and batteries.

The best way to manage the amount of HHWs in your home is to

read the labels! If the product has words like: "CAUTION,"

"WARNING," or "DANGER," seek alternatives. Many common household hazardous wastes, such as glass cleaner

(often containing ammonia) have an eco-friendly cousin, such as a vinegar and water solution (1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 quart water).

For more info on eco-friendly alternatives visit: http://eartheasy.com/live_nontoxic_solutions.htm

However, you may still have gallons of left over paint or burnt-out Mercury containing Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) sitting in your garage, unsure about what to do with them. Improper disposal of HHWs is not only illegal, but can contaminate drinking water, pollute waterways, and affect the quality of life of the landfill or recycle center employees. So how do you ensure the protection of our environment?

Below you will find the local organizations that are able to properly dispose of these items.
